The publication
South Sudan’s politics cannot be understood in isolation. Decisions at home intersect with regional interests, international institutions and the global economy. Ramdiet examines those connections and what they mean for the country’s choices.
Founded and edited by Gatluak Ramdiet, the publication brings a South Sudanese perspective to questions of governance, diplomacy, political economy and international order. Its purpose is to contribute careful analysis to public debate: useful to specialists, accessible to students and clear to readers encountering a subject for the first time.
Gatluak Ramdiet
Gatluak Ramdiet is a South Sudanese lawyer, writer and Term Member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
His legal career spans public service and private practice in New York, including service as an Assistant District Attorney in the Bronx. He earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Nebraska College of Law and completed an internship with the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs in 2018.
Having left South Sudan as a child and built his education and career in the United States, he brings a perspective shaped by both countries. His work focuses on how law, institutions and international relationships influence the choices available to states and the lives of the people they serve.
The approach
Ramdiet begins with a question worth examining. Articles develop a clear argument, connect it to evidence and take competing explanations seriously. They consider the practical costs of policy choices and identify developments that could change the assessment.
The publication starts with South Sudan and looks outward through regional and comparative analysis. The aim is to build a body of work that helps readers understand both immediate developments and the deeper forces behind them.
Ramdiet is independently edited. Views expressed here are the authors’ own and do not represent the Council on Foreign Relations or other affiliated institutions.
